Garmin Gps Instructions

I have a Garmin GPS 340 StreetPilot. Can you help with “Acquiring Satellite” delay problems?
It’s normal for this message to appear for a few minutes at the start of a trip but lately it is taking 40 minutes or more.
Example: St. Louis is about 45 miles away. I set the Garmin for a St. Louis address when I pulled out of my driveway. It was a clear day and the “Acquiring Satellite” indicator remained on the screen with no voice instructions until I was about 3 miles from St. Louis. While in St. Louis I typed in another St. Louis address and the same thing happened. The location was about 5 miles away but I didn’t know how to get there. It took about 40 minutes before the GPS came to life (so to speak)
Any ideas on what the problem might be and how to rectify it?
Thank You:
A long acquire time usually means that the GPS is downloading the ‘almanac’. What happens is that the GPS satellites have to send the GPS all the data about where they are – and what their orbits are. The GPS uses this data to calculate it’s position.
Usually it only has to do a full update once in a blue moon, and thereafter it gets bits of data update when they change.
However – if the GPS has a problem with either its memory, OR the battery that keeps the internal clock ticking, then it can get confused.
It would be useful to see if the time that the GPS shows is at all incorrect when you turn it on. If so – the internal battery could be the problem. Did you turn the GPS off at all between the two tries to get to the address in St Louis?
If it is the battery – it would involve a service return to Garmin, so could be quite costly.
You haven’t changed cars have you? Some cars have metallic windscreens that can block the GPS signals, which could also give a similar problem.
