answering machines caller id
How do I link my phone—answering machine—and caller ID box with DSL service??

I just got DSL and bought my own phone filter from Radio Shack. I have the DSL computer on it’s own outlet jack.

On the other outlet jack I placed the filter, this is where I have my phone—that is connected to the answering machine—that is connected to the caller ID box. The phone works fine, and the ID works fine, but my answering machine will not trigger with incoming calls.

Do I need another filter (DSL micro filter) just for that machine??

the DSL should not affect the answering machine, if it is connected the way that you say.. every thing pluged into a jack needs a DSL filter EXCEPT the modem…

so you say you have DSL filter –> CALL ID –> ANS MACH –> PHONE….

I say that is a birds nest of wires that you got there… there are plenty of phones available for reasonable price, that provide phone/ans mach/call id all in one unit…

make sure that from the DSL filter it goes to the “line” of the CALL ID, and from the “phone” or “out” goes to the “line” of the ans machine, and then the “out” or “phone” goes to the phone…

once everything has been confirmed connected properly, then make sure that every thing requiring a power supply (call id, ans mach, phone?) is plugged into electrical power, and reciving the power…

check to make sure that the ans mach is on.. older models will have a slide switch, newer models will either have a push button with an LED, or you will need to scroll a voice prompt menu…

make sure to set the number of rings to what your preference is , either 2, 4 or TS…

if all else fails, heres a quick test to check your ans mach…
the DSL signal only comes thru when the modem is powered on…. turn the modem off, and plug the ans mach directly into a phone jack (no filter, no call id, etc) and check from here… if it works, then you are going to have to do some further troubleshooting why it isnt working when everything is set up together…

** the DSL wouldnt disable the ans mach from picking up the calls… if not properly filtered, the phone call may knock the modem off line, or you will hear the DSL data (static) on the line…
